The most important points

  1. EU freedom of movement: as an EU citizen you need no visa, but a Yellow Slip from three months.
  2. Tax residence: the 183-day or 60-day rule decides residence.
  3. Deregistration in Germany: deregister cleanly, otherwise tax liability continues.
  4. Exit taxation: clarify in advance with company shares (sec. 6 AStG).
  5. Tax number: the basis for everything further.
  6. Health insurance: cover via GESY or privately.
  7. Housing: rent first, get to know the region.
  8. School: with children, check English or international schools.
  9. Moving logistics: sea freight, car (left-hand traffic!), pets.
  10. Substance: with a company, plan real presence on the ground.

The most common mistake is an unclean separation from Germany. Plan the steps in the right order and with some buffer.
